THE NICKNAME PEOPLE KNOW ME FOR…

As Simon & Garfunkel would say in their worldwide smash hit song, you can call me Al.

IN A NUTSHELL, MY JOB IS TO…

Grow Apricity in New Zealand and make it very profitable. I work with a small, tight-knit team based in Auckland to deliver a solution for businesses facing cash flow issues. We focus on developing strong working relationships and staying in regular communication with clients to ensure we can help with as much or as little as they require. I like to think we add a personal touch to our client relationships.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I HAVE LEARNED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS IS…

Be patient – which sounds easy but can be quite challenging at times. Thankfully I have a recent example of patience and persistence paying off. In a nutshell, I’d been working on securing a new client for 2 1/2 years without much luck but we finally got there and it was a big deal. The satisfaction of all mine + our team’s hard work paying off was incredible.

MY FIRST JOB OUT OF SCHOOL WAS…

Office junior and trainee Teller at Bank of New Zealand Wanganui branch. I was a keen rower in those days and almost lost my life in a car accident on my way to a regatta; after 30 days in a coma (not induced), my work colleagues provided amazing support in keeping me involved and getting me back on my feet. I will always be indebted to those people, the BNZ Manager (Hedley Gibson), and the team at that time.

IF I HAD THE DAY OFF TODAY, YOU WOULD FIND ME…

Probably working, as one day is not enough for me to wind down. However, if it were the first day of a long weekend I would be at our beach at Kuratau heading to the lake for some fishing.

MY FAVOURITE BOOK/MOVIE/SONG IS…

My favourite book is Winning Matters by legendary former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick, who may not have been the greatest rugby player, but was a great leader. Movie is Good Morning Vietnam – Robin Williams one of the funniest men who lived in my time, based on the story of radio DJ Adrian Cronauer. A true story that brings all of my emotions to the surface every time I watch it. Favourite song is, Me & Bobbie McGee – Janice Joplin – theme song we adopted when a rowing eight I was in, set a world record for a 12-hour continuous row. It’s etched into my mind to this day.

MY FAVOURITE THING ABOUT APRICITY IS…

I am part of a collection of diverse people from different backgrounds and ethnicities who together make up the best team I have ever worked in. We’re all very different, and acknowledge that from time to time we will not agree, but together produce great results.
