Tony Harmey

Tony joined us in early 2014 and is a key client relationship manager. He works closely with our clients to ensure the Apricity model is right for their business.

Prior to joining Apricity, Tony owned and operated his own hotels for more than 20 years, providing him with extensive knowledge of small to medium enterprises, and the day-to-day challenges and opportunities these face. During this time, he served as the president of the Australian Hotels Association (Far South Coast Branch).

Together with his beautiful wife and two youngest children, Tony moved to the Southern Highlands in 2013. However, in his heart he will always proudly be a boy from Bankstown

What did you do before you joined our illustrious organisation?
I am a qualified Greenskeeper (or as I used to say to the girls, a Sports Turf Superintendent), but I have mostly worked in the hotel industry, where I ran, owned and operated hotels for 30 years. This helped me really understand the importance of strong financial management and the pressures of running a small business. I loved this work; luckily we have some great pubs in Bowral and it’s definitely more fun being on the other side of the bar.
What’s the thing you love most about your job?
I really love the environment of the workplace. It’s such a fun, happy place to be and there is a really nice sense of family within the workplace.
I also really enjoy working with our clients. I love seeing them through the journey, from identifying potential clients to the application process, through the approval stage, and then seeing how our invoice finance facility helps them thrive. I love learning about different clients and their industries. While it’s not always possible, I really love meeting with clients face to face rather than over the phone. It’s so important in creating good relationships.
What are you passionate about?
I am definitely most passionate about family and friends. I really cherish my family, and good friendships are very important to me.
In a career sense, I’m most passionate about watching Apricity grow and contributing to that growth. I’m passionate about working with our clients aso that they can benefit from our business and, as a result, experience growth of their own company.
What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?
1. It’s not about the money you make, it’s about what you can save. You can turn over what you like in business but unless you’re watching your expenditure there’s not much point.
2. Surround yourself with really good people. A business is only as strong as the people that work there!
3. Have integrity and honesty. Your name is your signature – without integrity, you don’t have much. I think it’s also imperative that if you’re selling a product, you have to believe in that product. I’m certainly a believer in our product because I see on a daily basis the positive difference it can make to the lives of our clients.
What is your favourite family tradition?
t has to be Christmas. It’s such a special time of year for family and it’s great getting to see the kids growing up and being together at Christmas time.

Are you a sweet or savoury person?
I am definitely a sweet person. I love chocolate and that will never change. My wife tries to make me switch to nuts, but there’s usually a bag of Liquorice Bullets or Maltesers rolling around in my desk drawer at work.
What characteristic do you most admire in others?
I admire honesty and integrity the most in others. I cherish friendship very dearly as well, so good friendship is something I admire in a person as well.

How are you lucky and why?
I am happy and healthy, I love and live life to the fullest. I have four beautiful, healthy, happy children – Sam, Tommy, Lily and Max and a fun, loving, happy, low maintenance, hard-working wife, Angie. We have the best time and enjoy each other’s company immensely; whether it be at home with a glass of Vino or when we go out.
